Welcome

This club is for young people, aged between 11 and 25, who have learning and/or physical disabilities.

We provide a range of activities throughout the year, aiming to give people a chance to try something new, and to participate in an activity outside of school or college.  The emphasis is on having fun, but people will also gain social skills, improve fitness, coordination and sports skills.

Great South Runrebecca

Rebecca coaches our gym and aquafit sessions, raised over £400 for the club by running in the Great South Run on October 25th.  You can still support her and the club by sponsoring her run.  Sponsor on-line at www.charitychoice.co.uk and search on Multi-sports club or on the charity number 1109962

Sponsored Walk

We had a great time, thanks to Phil for leading the walk and telling us so much about the history of the park.  Sponsorship money is still coming in, over £600 so far!  We donated £250 to the QE2 Activity Centre from our sponsorships in recognition of their support over the years.

Grant success - we have received £4235 towards our summer activities via the Hampshire County Council Youth Opportunity Fund and we have been successful in our bid for £2700 towards Friday football skills.  Both grants pay for hire of venues and coaching/instructor fees.

Royal Mencap Society

We are delighted that we have been formally approved for Non-branded affiliation of the Royal Mencap Society. This was a long process involving much paperwork and writing policies.

What do non-branded affiliated groups get?

  • we can't use the names ‘Mencap' and ‘Gateway' but we can state that we are affiliated to Mencap on any stationery, letters, posters etc
  • we will receive support, advice and information from their network of staff
  • we will receive their newsletter and magazine and lots of information from across Mencap
  • we will get access to Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks for groups in England and Wales
  • our members will be also be members of Mencap and we can be involved with Mencap's decision making process

Last year we decided that it would be worth the effort for the credibility it will add to the club, and to enable us to access their CRB checking procedures.

Tesco vouchers

We have done really well collecting vouchers this year.  We have ordered new bibs for the football group, and a large first aid kit.  They will arrive during the autumn term.

Thanks to all who helped.

Sponsored walk

Sunday 6th September at QE2 Activity Centre, Bursledon, starting at 10.00 and lasting about 2 hours.  Join us or sponsor us and raise funds for the club.  We rely on grants to keep operating, but we will need additional funds to continue running the full range of activities.  Please support us.   barbecue

Last year was great and we raised £355, shared between us and the QE2 Activity Centre, and we hope to do even better this year.  Phil Oates, the centre manager is a heritage guide and we learned all about the park’s history.  This worked really well, because we had frequent stops to listen to his stories, giving us a chance to catch our breath before moving on.

This year the walk will be a bit shorter and we will finish back at the centre for a BBQ!  Bring your own food to cook, or bring a picnic with you and join us for a chance to relax afterwards.

Please let us know if you will be joining us, and bring family, friends and anyone you can!  Sponsorship forms to download here   sponsorship form  and an information sheet

Barn Dance

We have confirmed bookings now, and will definitely be holding a Barn Dance on Saturday 31 October 7.30 - 10.30pm at the QE2 Activity Centre, Bursledon.

Please mark it in your diaries!

We need to sell lots of tickets to cover our costs,  so bring all your friends and family along too.  It should be great fun - some of us attended one with the band, the Woodsiders(www.woodsiders.co.uk)  a few months ago, and it worked really well.

Food will be bangers and beans, in true cowboy style!   (Hats optional!)  Let us know of any special dietary requirements.
Bring your own drinks, although we will have some soft drinks for sale.

Tickets are on sale NOW!, from committee members.  Prices £8 adult, £5 child (u 16) or family ticket of 2 adults and 2 children for £24.  Excellent value for money for a Saturday night's entertainment.

Hope you will all be able to make it there!

Old news

Sponsored Walk 2008

We enjoyed a great walk on Sunday 21 July, led by Phil Oates from the QE2 Activity Centre who is a Heritage Guide.  The weather was good to us, and we spent 2½ hours exploring the area.  We learned interesting facts about the river, and people who used to live there.  There was Dave the Peddlar who was cut up (literally) and dumped in the river.  There was the hidden well, evidence of brick works and old jetties.   There was the wreckage of Henry V's ship, Grace Dieu.  However, the highlight of the walk was when Phil fell off the fence! Oh how everyone laughed. (He wasn't hurt!)

Many thanks to the families who supported us, by participating and by sponsoring.  We raised over £300 and presented a donation of  £140 to the QE2 Activity Centre on 4 August.

Families who walked, and walked, and walked . . . Small, Perrin, Jones, Daud, Nicholson, Trimmer

Not too late to make a donation and reward their efforts on behalf of the club!
